Extension Service highlights the role of exercise during National Stress Awareness Month

To wrap up National Stress Awareness Month this April, Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is encouraging the community to explore the many ways exercise can help reduce stress and improve overall health.

Why Exercise Matters
Exercise isn’t just about physical fitness — it’s also a key player in stress management. Regular physical activity helps:

●      Lower levels of stress hormones like cortisol

●      Release endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators

●      Improve sleep quality and energy levels

●      Enhance mental clarity and reduce anxiety

“Exercise is a natural and effective way to combat stress,” said Danae Hicks, family and community health agent for Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. “You don’t need to spend hours at the gym — even small amounts of movement can have a big impact on your well-being.”

Best Exercises for Stress Relief
Different types of exercise offer unique benefits for stress relief. Here are a few options to consider:

  1. Aerobic Activities: Walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming boost heart health while reducing stress.
  2. Yoga and Stretching: Combining movement with mindfulness, yoga promotes relaxation and reduces muscle tension.
  3. Strength Training: Lifting weights or using resistance bands can improve confidence and focus.
  4. Group Sports: Joining a team activity fosters social connections, which are vital for stress management.

How to Get Started
Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service recommends starting small and finding activities you enjoy. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. For beginners, consider:

●      Taking a brisk walk during lunch breaks

●      Joining a local yoga or fitness class

●      Dancing to your favorite music at home
