Applications still open for WISD classroom adopters

Waxahachie ISD and the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce have issued a call for local businesses, churches, and community organizations to adopt one of the district’s third-grade classes.

Requirements are simple: Make a one-time $50 donation of classroom supplies and volunteer one hour per month in the classroom. Volunteers must complete a registration process and pass a background check.

What began as a pilot program of three classes in the spring of 2008 has grown to an initiative that now serves more than 50 third-grade classes across WISD.

“Programs like Adopt-A-Class strengthen the relationship between the community and the school district by actively engaging citizens in the learning experiences in our classrooms,” the district’s program webpage reads. “Through this partnership, students learn more about their community and benefit from the unique skills and resources of their adopting organization.

Adopters are paired with a teacher/classroom, and each partnership “develops its own goals and activities based on the resources [of the adopter] and the needs of the class.” Activities can range from serving as readers, tutors, or mentors; sponsoring awards and incentives; attending special functions; and or donating equipment or supplies, among others.

“From providing snacks and supplies to reading with students and lending a helping hand, there are countless ways to get involved and make a difference,” a chamber spokesman said.
