Tax-Free Weekend starts tomorrow, Aug. 7

It’s Tax-Free Weekend again! This year, the annual event runs from Friday, Aug, 7, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.

Throughout the weekend, families can purchase qualifying back-to-school items tax-free at retailers across the state. For more information about qualifying items visit the state comptroller’s website, comptroller.texas.gov.

“Tax-Free Weekend puts real money back in the pockets of Texas families as they buy clothes and school supplies for their kids,” Gov. Greg Abbott said at a special event in Alamo. “I encourage every parent to take advantage of these savings at retailers across our state and to support the small businesses that form the backbone of the Texas economy.”

As part of his remarks, Abbott noted that more than 99 percent of businesses in Texas are small businesses. In 2025, Abbott signed HCR 9 to designate the first Saturday of every month as Small Business Saturday.

Tax-Free Weekend is expected to deliver more than $140 million in tax savings for Texans. Since its inception in 1999, the “back-to-school” sales tax holiday has saved Texans more than $2 billion. Senate Bill 1415, also signed into law last year by Abbott, established a uniform weekend (the first weekend in August) for the holiday so more families benefit regardless of local school start dates.
