Recognizing skin cancer warning signs

Ellis County, TX – Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but early detection can save lives. During UV Safety Awareness Month, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service highlights the importance of recognizing skin cancer warning signs.
“Regular self-examinations and dermatologist visits are crucial for catching skin cancer early,” says Danae Hicks. “Knowing what to look for can make all the difference.”
Skin Cancer Warning Signs to Watch For:
● Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other.
● Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges.
● Color: Multiple or uneven colors, including shades of brown, black, or pink.
● Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (6 mm).
● Evolving: Changes in size, shape, or color over time.
If you notice any of these signs, consult a dermatologist promptly. For more tips on skin health, reach out to Danae Hicks at 972-825-5175 or danae.hicks@ag.tamu.edu.
