Protecting your skin in summer: Understanding SPF and sunscreen

As summer heats up, protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is more important than ever. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service encourages Ellis County residents to prioritize their skin health by understanding SPF and sunscreen basics.
“Applying sunscreen daily is one of the simplest ways to protect your skin from sun damage,” says Danae Hicks, Family and Community Health Agent. “But it’s essential to choose the right product and use it correctly.”
Tips for Smart Sunscreen Use:
- Choose Broad-Spectrum Protection: Look for sunscreens labeled “broad-spectrum,” which protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Know Your SPF: SPF 30 or higher is recommended for daily use. SPF 50+ provides added protection for extended outdoor activities.
- Apply Generously: Use about one ounce (a shot glass size) of sunscreen to cover exposed areas of skin.
- Reapply Regularly: Reapply sunscreen every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.
- Don’t Forget Hidden Areas: Ears, lips, and the tops of your feet are often overlooked but are prone to sunburn.
