Healthy glow without the sun: Alternatives to tanning for summer beauty

Ellis County, TX – Achieving a sun-kissed glow doesn’t have to mean exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. This UV Safety Awareness Month, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service shares safe and effective alternatives to traditional tanning.

“Tanning may seem appealing, but the risks of UV damage and skin cancer outweigh the benefits,” says Danae Hicks. “There are safer ways to get that summer glow.”

Signs of UV damage to the skin can range from immediate effects like sunburn to long-term consequences, including premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer. Some key signs of UV damage are:

  1. Sunburn: Redness, pain, and swelling caused by overexposure to UVB rays. Severe sunburn may lead to blistering and peeling skin.
  2. Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots or patches (also known as sunspots or age spots) often develop on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, and shoulders.
  3. Dry and Rough Skin: UV damage can cause skin to lose moisture and become rough or flaky.
  4. Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Prolonged UV exposure accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging, including wrinkles and sagging skin.
  5. Actinic Keratosis: These are rough, scaly patches that develop on sun-exposed areas and may be precancerous.
  6. Uneven Skin Texture: Chronic sun exposure can lead to changes in the skin's texture, making it appear leathery.
  7. Telangiectasia: Visible broken blood vessels, often on the face, are a result of UV-induced damage to blood vessels.
  8. Freckles: While some freckles are genetic, sun exposure can cause new freckles to form or existing ones to darken.
  9. Skin Cancer: UV exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancers, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. These may appear as new growths, changes in moles, or non-healing sores.

Safe Alternatives to Tanning:

●      Self-Tanning Lotions and Sprays: These products can provide a natural-looking tan without UV exposure.

●      Bronzing Makeup: Add a temporary glow with bronzing powders or creams.

●      Healthy Skin Habits: Stay hydrated and moisturize regularly to maintain a radiant complexion.
