Boost your brain health: Simple tips for a healthier mind

Did you know that lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and support brain health? This Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, the Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service shares practical tips to keep your brain healthy and active.

“Eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and engaging in lifelong learning are all effective ways to support brain health,” said Danae Hicks, Family and Community Health Agent for Ellis County. “Small, consistent changes can make a big difference.”

Incorporate colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your meals. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and walnuts, are particularly beneficial for brain health. Drinking plenty of water and limiting processed foods also contribute to overall well-being.

Regular physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or gardening, increases blood flow to the brain and reduces the risk of chronic conditions that can impact cognitive health. Additionally, mental stimulation through reading, puzzles, or learning new skills helps maintain cognitive function.

“Don’t forget the importance of quality sleep,” Hicks added. “Sleep plays a critical role in memory consolidation and overall brain function.”

Managing stress through mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, can also protect the brain from the negative effects of chronic stress.
