Back-to-school road safety: Protecting our students

As students across the country head back to school, it's important to prioritize road safety for children and drivers alike. With school buses, walkers, cyclists, and carpooling families sharing the roads, the risk of accidents increases during the busy school season. To help ensure a safe journey to and from school, we’ve compiled key safety tips for parents, students, and drivers alike, in partnership with the Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
Pedestrian Safety
Walking to school is a rite of passage for many students, but it's essential that they understand the importance of safe pedestrian habits:
● Always use designated crosswalks and wait for traffic lights or signals to cross.
● Teach children to look both ways before crossing the street, even when they have the right of way.
● Walk on sidewalks and avoid distractions like smartphones when crossing busy roads.
Bicycle Safety
For those who bike to school, safety is just as crucial:
● Always wear a helmet and make sure your bike is in good working condition.
● Use reflective gear or bright clothing to ensure visibility, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
● Follow traffic laws by using hand signals when turning and stopping at red lights or stop signs.
School Bus Safety
For families relying on school buses, reinforcing safe practices is key:
● Remind children to stand at least six feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus.
● Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on or off.
● Once on the bus, always remain seated and keep the aisles clear to avoid accidents.
Driving Near Schools
Drivers also play an essential role in student safety:
● Always slow down in school zones and be prepared for children to cross the road at any moment.
● Never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended.
● Be aware of the increased number of students walking and biking to school, and keep distractions at bay while driving.
By working together, parents, students, and drivers can ensure that every student gets to school safely this year.
