Back-to-school preparedness: How families can contribute to a safe environment

As we approach the new school year, it's crucial for families to collaborate with schools to ensure a safe and well-prepared environment for students. Here are some steps that parents and guardians can take to prepare for emergencies and enhance safety at school, in partnership with the Ellis County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Review Emergency Plans

Every family should have a clear emergency plan, and it’s important to ensure that the school’s procedures are understood:

●      Confirm that the school has up-to-date emergency contact information for your child and review evacuation and lockdown protocols.

●      If your child has medical needs, make sure the school is aware of any necessary accommodations or emergency treatments.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Make sure your child knows what to do in the event of an emergency:

●      Establish meeting points and communication strategies so that family members can easily reconnect in case of unexpected events.

●      Teach your child how to contact you or other trusted adults if they are in danger or feel unsafe.

Provide Identification and Emergency Supplies

To help students feel more secure, make sure they are equipped with the right information:

●      Ensure that your child has an identification card or a note with emergency contact details in their backpack.

●      Consider providing a small first-aid kit or any necessary medications for the school year.

Collaborate with the School

Stay in regular communication with your child’s school about safety initiatives and any concerns:

●      Attend parent-teacher meetings and stay informed about school safety programs.

●      Volunteer to help with safety efforts, such as school patrols or assisting with school events that promote safety.

By preparing your child and working with the school, we can ensure a safe, productive school year for everyone.
