Arabella hosts science activities for lifelong learners
RED OAK — The question came every morning last month: “What are we doing today?” At Arabella of Red Oak, the standing answer from the team was always the same: “Lots of shenanigans.”
Throughout March, residents participated in the March Madness Mad Science Lab, a month-long series of hands-on science experiments led by independent living activities director, Robin Jo Smith. The lineup covered real science with measurable impact, and no shortage of wide eyes from the group.
Residents made Elephant Toothpaste, created Blooming Flowers by drawing on paper towels with markers and Q-tips and placing them in water to see the colors bloom over 24 hours, and tackled the Magic Pencil Poke, an experiment that left the group mesmerized. After a full month in the lab, this group made one thing clear: Science has no age requirements.
“Every day in our Mad Science Lab brought something new, and our residents showed up ready for all of it,” Smith said. “They asked questions, tried things they had never done before, and left each session with something unexpected. Science is a great equalizer.”
